ALTAR SERVERS’ GUIDELINES AND OBLIGATIONS

VERY IMPORTANT!  Make every effort to come early to church.  Do not serve, if you arrive during or after the readings of the Epistle & Gospel.

BEFORE coming into the altar please:

1)   Make the sing of the cross, venerate the icon and cross on the tetrapod

2)   You can purchase a candle and light it

3)    Venerate (Kiss) the icon on the deacon’s doors before entering the altar

4)   Make the sign of the cross and bow towards the altar; we do this because Christ is present on the altar in the tabernacle.

BEFORE the start of the Divine Service, please make sure the following is done:

1)   Light the candles on the altar and the seven branch candle stand

2)   Make sure that the charcoal is lit and the kadylo (censer) is ready to use.  You should always keep an eye on the charcoal, FATHER DOES NOT LIKE DEAD KADYLOS.

3)   Find out who is reading the Epistle and if the reading is ready.

4)   If you are in the altar early, you can start to cut the prosphora.

DURING the Divine Liturgy:

1)   Unless you are preparing for an entrance or getting the kadylo ready or are not feeling well, you need to be standing at the altar

2)   Prepare candles:

a)   AFTER the “Amen” of the Little Litany just before the Third Antiphon is sung:

b)   AFTER the reading of the Epistle, during the ALLELUIA, while Father is incensing;

c)   AFTER the “Amen” of the Little Litany before the singing of the Cherubic Hymn before the Great Entrance.

3)   Present the censor (Kadylo) and incense:

a)   BEFORE the Divine Liturgy starts:

b)   BEFORE the Epistle reading when Father comes to the front of the altar;

c)   DURING the last petition of the Litany of Fervent Supplication (ONLY if the Litany for the Departed will be chanted);

d)   DURING the last Little Litany before the Cherubic Hymn;

e)   AFTER the consecration of the Gifts, after Father rises;

f)    AFTER the communion of the faithful.

4)   Please, give Fr. Vasyl your phone number and/or your email address.

5)   If you are scheduled to serve AND cannot:  YOU MUST call Father Deacon Vasyl (857-251-4779), or email him at:  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it as soon as you know you will not be able to perform your duties.  (Please email me as soon as possible.)  You will then have to wait until the next time you are scheduled.

6)   If you have graduated from Sunday School, you can serve whenever you wish.  So you will not be listed on the schedule, just plan on arriving early when you want to serve.
